Beginning July 31, Daniil Trifonov joins the Mahler Chamber Orchestra for a tour across Germany and Spain. Led by Daniel Harding, Trifonov and the orchestra make stops in Wiesbaden (July 31), Lübeck (Aug 1), Torroella (Aug 3), Pollença (Aug 5), San Sebastián (Aug 6), and Santander (Aug 7). Trifonov performs Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, on a program that also includes Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8 in G major.
Then, Trifonov joins violinist Sergei Dogadin for duo recitals of Prokofiev and Shostakovich at Austria’s Grafenegg Festival (Aug 22) and Switzerland’s Menuhin Festival Gstaad (Aug 24). At Grafenegg, their account of Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes, in Dmitri Tsyganov and Lera Auerbach’s transcription for violin and piano, marks the arrangement’s Austrian premiere.
To close out the summer, Trifonov reunites with Andris Nelsons for performances of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival. The concerto is one of those heard on Destination Rachmaninov, the Deutsche Grammophon series that earned the pianist two of his six Grammy nominations and BBC Music Magazine’s “Concerto Recording of the Year” (Aug 29, 30).
